About Tahoe City Golf Course
This is a short, friendly par 33 in downtown Tahoe City: about 2,700 yards with one par 5, four par 4s and four par 3s, and the beach, bars and shops a walk away. It's usually playable April through November, so in spring you can ski in the morning and play in the afternoon. Dogs are welcome.
It dates to 1918, when May "Queenie" Dunn Hupfel designed it and served as pro and manager. It was the Tahoe Tavern's course, built for guests who came in on a railroad spur, and started as six holes with sand greens before reaching nine holes and 2,700 yards in 1926. Building around it kept it that size for good. In the fifties it hosted big-money games with Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and others.
The Bechdolt family owned it from 1948 until 2012, when the Tahoe City Public Utility District, Placer County, the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association and the Truckee Tahoe Airport District bought it to keep it a public course. The district runs it now, managed by Bob Bonino, whose father Angelo ran it from 1951 to 1974 and whose mother went into labor with him on the 3rd green.
It's one of 36 courses Yoink watches in the Reno & Tahoe area, and the closest alternative is The Links at Everline, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
