About Lagoon Park Golf Course
Lagoon Park is Montgomery's public 18, a Charles Graves design built in 1978 on parkland that used to be swamp. It's a tree course: 100-year oaks, tall pines, dogwoods and California raindrop trees line the fairways, and in spring hundreds of azaleas bloom along the paths.
It's par 72 and 6,800 yards from the back, and flat enough that walking is popular. Plenty of the holes dogleg, and with that many trees, where you put the tee ball matters more than how far it goes. The hole people talk about is the 15th, a 550-yard par 5 that doglegs left and then back right. Big hitters can try to carry the 150-foot pines at the first corner, but it takes at least 270 yards from the back tee. Pull it off and you can go for the green in two.
The clubhouse has a golf shop, a tennis shop and the Lagoon Park Bar and Grill. Troon runs the golf operation and sets a pace-of-play target of 4 hours 15 minutes.
It's one of 31 courses Yoink watches in the Alabama — Birmingham to Montgomery area, and the closest alternative is Emerald Mountain Golf Club, about 7 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
